Hello New York Public Library...

...we meet again! :)

Hi Library Lovers! It's Tarra, and I'm back with library adventures at the New York Public Library! YAY! You know you're excited too! ;)

Since I completed one of my internships on Monday, I have time to get back to the job search in one of my favorite places - you guessed it, the library!  The library keeps me more focused when it comes to getting stuff done as well as provides the proper seating area and hard surface to set up my work station.  Yes Rick, as I mentioned before, these tables are good for dancing on! haha

Man...taking pictures in the library is kinda awkward. haha Definitely more comfortable when you're at the UP library!

ANYWAY, it's time to get some work done. The library closes at 8 p.m. EDT, which means it really closes at 7:45 p.m. What?!

100! 100! 100! (and ready for 100 more!)

Can you believe it?! 

This is our 100th post!

Library blog writers on an adventure! :)

 I remember back in elementary school when we would do activities to celebrate the 100th day of school or when the benefactor of our school turned 100 years old.  I made a necklace with 100 beads and another necklace of 100 plastic caps from those little Sunny Delight juice bottles (yeah...promoting recycling!).  I think my sister collected 100 pennies (woo! a dollar!), while my brother made a paperclip chain with 100 paperclips.  It was just a matter of collecting 100 items to visually conceptualize what 100 looks like.  So how shall we celebrate the 100th post of The Library Adventures*?

* Yes, we had to change the title (in case you haven't noticed) because Madison joined our writing crew...

If I was at school, I'd probably bring in 100 cupcakes or 100 cookies to the library and share it with all our fantastic followers (you know who you are)!  The Library Adventures wouldn't be anything without them, as I have stated so many times in my closing statements over the summer. 

Well, I'm sure Rick and Madison will figure out something to celebrate this momentous moment - 100 posts!

So what direction is the blog going to go in for its next 100 posts?  Only time will tell, but good times for sure...

From our start in February of this year, the Library Adventures has definitely grown from their original concept of just recording our adventures in the UP library.  While Rick and Madison are still living up the adventures at UP, I graduated and moved to NYC, recording my adventures at the public library here.   

Although we are miles apart and 100 posts down, 

the adventures still continue!

We've added segments that focus on different aspects of the library, adding some variety to our adventures.  Some of these segments include: Books in the Library and Library Travels.  

As Rick, Madison and other UP students continue into the core of the fall semester at UP and beyond, the adventures will start to get back to some of the antics as the end of last year, but you know with new faces and some new places in the library, you never know what to expect!

I'm excited to see what will happen in the next 100 posts, and I hope you are too and join us on our upcoming adventures!!

I'm pretty sure Tarra covered what I wanted to say about the momentous event of ours in this here blog. 100 posts ago I definitely wouldn't have thought that the blog would have evolved the way it did. It really did start out merely as just a way to record our adventures. To see where it's come from then amazes me and even makes me chuckle a bit.

Seriously?

- Who would have thought of celebrating birthdays in the library?

- Who would have thought finding different kinds of books in the library would be fun?*
*By the way, keep an eye on that because I have recently found some pretty cool books

- Who would have thought hanging out in the library would have been the cool thing to do?

Most importantly: Who would have thought of making this blog about the library? (haha)

Anyways, I guess I should write something that has a direction as to where this blog is going. As Tarra mentioned, there have been some changes to the blog. One of them has definitely been the addition of Madison to posting.

With Madison posting now, we feel like the blog has a totally different dimension that it never had last year. What I mean by this is Madison might be writing, every now and then, a behind the scenes kind of look at the library. You know? Give us the low down on what's going on in the library that the students, like myself, don't know.

I hope that by adding in this section of the blog it will give the reader's a more in depth look. You know!? bahaha.

As for the posting I'll be doing, it won't change. It'll still stay along the lines of what Tarra and I recorded in the last semester. I should mention that I will really have to work on getting to the library this year and staying there late. Not just for the sake of the blog, but because I really haven't been to the library all that much this year.

Take my word though that I will be a better presence in the library and that blogging will continue and it'll be like old times.

If there's one thing Tarra and I have decided on, it's the fact that we want YOU, yes you the reader, to be involved with our adventures this year. By this we mean that we want you to not just be part of the adventure, but even let people know about your own adventure.

This is your opportunity to add to the blog. Just simply drop me a blog post to my email (baleros13@up.edu) as well as a picture of you taken while in the library and it'll get put up along with other posts. I really hope that you guys take advantage of this because it'll be fun to hear what other people experience in the library!

Again, it'll give a different dimension to the blog. It'll be just more than my perspective and Madison's perspective. Seriously, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS!!

So many rules...

Found the main reading room at the New York Public Library.  It's really spacious. Tons of spots for laptops and what not, but who would have thought there would be so many rules about where you can and can not have a laptop or earphones for that matter?!

I asked the information desk for some help, and she insisted I go to the North Hall.  Got all settled in and everything, and then one of the security guards gave me a slip of paper. I thought he was going to tell me I can't be on Facebook or something. But no, it said you can't wear headphones because the area is strictly used for research and study.  I'm pretty sure my music wasn't even that loud. 

So I migrated over to the South Hall because you can wear head phones there.  I found a good spot, but then there was a sign that says no laptop docking here. Moving again...I was heading to the last tables but no, no laptop docking there either.  Finally, found a spot under the AC. It's so cold right here, but at least I have power for my laptop and music - the essentials to applying for jobs online. ;)

Rick & Madison or any of our followers - Are there any rules like that at the UP library?  Just curious.

NYC Public Library!

After a couple days without Internet, I finally found a place with Internet! Thanks goodness because I was going crazy without it!

I've been on a whirlwind trip to New York City, and being in desperate need to find a job, I needed to find a place to find Internet access.

Thank GOD for the New York Public Library!

I'm sure you knew that I would depend on the library...just so I could write on here! Haha! Well, as much as cozy as a coffee shop, which would probably be Starbucks here, I honestly have to say that I'm more comfortable in a library.  After all those hours in the UP library, it just became a part of me.  So look forward to my adventures from the NYPL while Rick and Madison keep it real at the UP library! ;) 

For today's adventure, I started a little late.  Next time I'm going to wake up and go straight to the library. I really need to figure out my NYC schedule. But yeah, after doing the usual Facebook, Twitter, blog, email routine, it's back to the job applications. I have the resumes and cover letters all ready. Just a matter of emailing them! Woo...! 

Well, I'll add a picture in a bit or next time. Hope you all are doing fantastic!

Libraries in Colorado!

It's been a while since I've posted on here, but hey! I'm still here! Well, not at UP here, but I think you catch my drift.  Anyway, I hope summer has been treating everyone well! I know mine has had its ups and downs, but I've enjoyed it for the most part. You can find out more on my blog...

So library adventures in Colorado?
How does that happen, right?  I wasn't even planning on having library adventures as I headed to this Rocky Mountain state in July, but it happened.  

For starters, my hotel had a library in it!  I didn't get a chance to visit it because people were always in it when I passed by, but it was right next to the elevators so I saw it frequently.  It was just a small room filled with books and a few computers. I just didn't know that a library was an amenity at a hotel.  Different, eh?

The whole purpose for the trip to Colorado was to attend my cousin's wedding.  Best wishes to the bride and groom! While we were outside of the church to see the newlyweds drive off in a limo, I noticed the library across the street! haha I wasn't the only one that noticed either; my cousin's girlfriend asked if it was open. Classic!

Could you imagine having a wedding IN A LIBRARY?  The Today show was talking about unconventional ways to have a wedding, and people were getting married at stores, amusement parks, underwater, and dressed up as their favorite comic book or movie.  Crazy! Just makes me wonder if a library has ever been a place to hold a wedding ceremony...

Before the close of our trip, we visited Manitou Springs, which is around the Colorado Springs area.  Checked out a couple points of interests, like Pike's Peak, Cliff Dwellings, and Cave of the Winds.  Driving through town, I found the public library of Manitou Springs.  Yes, again, I did not go inside.  We were sitting in traffic when I took this picture.

Looks so tranquil, hidden beneath green trees in the summer sunshine! Ah...! I wish I could have gone inside the libraries I saw on this trip.

It's cool that Rick and I are checking out or at least seeing different libraries around the country.  I definitely think this segment should continue.  It would be awesome if we even visited libraries around the world!

Madison and I were discussing how libraries are such a central place for knowledge with all the books.  It's truly fascinating, and I think that's what I really enjoy about libraries.  You can get lost in a book and uncovering a multitude of facts from cover to cover.  It's one of the best feelings to gain new interesting information. :)

PART ONE: Other libraries.

So I made it to my public library, and OMG! This new place is amazing!  They just moved it to a new, larger facility down the street from the original location, and I got to admit that the new building is fantastic! It even still has that new building smell! I'll definitely have to explore after writing this long awaited blog.

As Rick mentioned in his blog about his public library, it definitely feels weird being here and probably being the only college student graduate here (parents and the librarians don't count).  The high school students just got out of school within the past hour and a bunch of them are here homeworkin' it.  They've got about a week of school left.

I'm also like the only one with a laptop, which is totally different from UP since everyone brought their laptop with them. Sometimes the whole top balcony you could just see heads peering over laptops. It was always funny when Rick and I would notice a whole row of Macs...haha!  Kinda like this:

Alright...so wow! Just noticed the stained glass windows here, and the image is books! How cool! I swear this library just got a whole lot cooler by moving to this new location...






So to start off this finale, let's glance at some other libraries locally (Portland area) and around the country...then bring it back to UP.

Remember when I kept going to the Multnomah County Library to do research for my capstone?  I really enjoyed going to that library and looking at magazines from the 1940s.  I know Rick really wanted to come with me for a field trip to this library, but we never got the chance.  One day buddy...you'll see the County Library.  It's really easy to get to, even from the Max - Bus 35 to Red, stop at like 10th.  Something like that.  Anyway, most of the time I drove down there (thanks Colin!).  Thank goodness there was a parking garage only a block away.  So here's the library:

Other libraries that I've seen include...

1. Harvard University - Widener Library
That one had a real interesting story, combining it with the Titanic. Crazy huh?  Didn't get to see the inside of that, but it was just cool being there.





2. Boston Public Library
Didn't get a chance to go inside this one either, but when I was in Boston for NACA Nationals, we passed by it a couple of times. It looked like a huge library! Looks pretty magnificent at night, eh? I'm not sure how it comes with the next one on this list...




3. New York Public Library
I didn't go to New York this year, but I did go to the New York Public Library when I was there during Spring Break 2009.  It was amazing!  They have a mini-museum, where my cousins and I learned about Art Deco, an art style that was particularly popular in the 1920s and 1930s.  You can see Art Deco all over NYC, especially in the Empire State Building and Rockefeller, since those skyscrapers were established during that time period.  Ah! LOVE HISTORY...guess that's why I was a history minor! Anywho...it was neat being there too!

4. McGill University in Montreal, Canada
During the summer of 2009, I studied abroad in Montreal, and sometimes my friends and I would head over to the library to hold some legit study groups.  I only went into one room in this library because it was HUGE, and I couldn't find the other rooms.  Anyway, this room had a study room in the MIDDLE of the room. It was blocked off with sound proof glass!  My friends and I liked to quote Anchorman when we were in there. hahaha Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the library. :(

5. UCSD
I forget which library I was in, but there was a TON of places for people to sit and do there homework.  Since I came to visit the week before finals, the place was CROWDED. Seriously. Every spot was practically filled.  I wonder if people who didn't even know each other were sitting at the same table...? Anyway, there were these cubbies with computers and were like the only spaces open, so I busted out my homework there.  Seemed more like a gigantic study area rather than a library. Where were all the books?

So of all these libraries, none of them had the same community feeling that the library at the University of Portland had.  Sure, our library wasn't top of the line like some libraries, but it was good enough for what it was.  It became like a second home to me, especially during my final semester at UP. 

I ended up spending more time there in one semester than any of my previous semesters at UP. I can't even fathom how many hours I've spent in the library.  It's so crazy, but nevertheless, I've really enjoyed it.  :)

CLOSED on Sundays

My public library is closed on Sundays.  

At UP, I could spend my whole Sunday in the library if I wanted to, but it was pretty typical to find me there after mass till closing.  Ah...you know those Study Sundays when you attempt to do all the homework you had to do over the weekend. Bah...I hated those.

Anywho, the Elk Grove Library opens at noon tomorrow, which is perfect because I can head over there after my morning run! Woot! ;)

I'm sorry for this delay. As mentioned before, things have been really busy since I've returned home.

Get ready for the finale!  Well, at least my finale (for now).

Rick has summer school, starting tomorrow, and he wanted to give his two cents about being back on campus and in the library. So the adventures continue...kinda.

Waiting...

Yeah I know you've been waiting for my last post - my personal closing statement to the excellent adventures of Rick and Tarra.

Well, I've been at home - unpacking, cleaning, organizing, shopping, running, applying for jobs/internships, traveling, sleeping, watching TV, etc. It's been a busy time since I've returned to the Golden State. I haven't really had a chance to hit up the public library to finish off the blog.

However, I will try my best to get to the library this weekend! I just remembered the fambam and I are watching Iron Man 2 tomorrow, so the blog might need to be put off for another day. Sorry folks!

Anyway, I just wanted to give you a quick update because I've heard a bunch of you are waiting, including my buddy Rick!

Don't worry! The blog is coming! ;)

It's time!  Finals are ahead of us. 
The final stretch of the 2009-2010 school year! 

I can't believe how fast this year has gone by, and seriously, graduation is less than a week away! CRAZY. o_O

So library time!  EVERY seat was taken this afternoon.  I don't think I have seen the library so full! Shoot. Madison and I were in the basement, working. Well, more like she was working and I was sleeping because I was so tired from another sleepless night.

SIDE NOTE: I feel like I've been having more adventures with Madison than Rick lately. Oh well.

Madison and I took a break by walking to the park.  It was a nice day today!  Too bad this always seems to happen during finals week when everyone needs to be indoors, studying.  Then watch...graduation weekend will be dreary. Blah.

When we returned to the library, we decided it just wasn't our scene because those "soundproof" study rooms are freakin' loud.  People think they are soundproof so they talk in regular voices, but we can definitely still hear them - loud and clear!  I needed to nap any way.  Good thing St. Mary's has those comfy couches AND hardly anyone was using the space to study.  New study space...maybe.

Back in the library later...

Felt pretty productive after dry mounting some photos in the graphics lab.  Too bad the graphics lab worker didn't know what I was asking for, so I had to set it up myself. Oh well.

Sitting in the balcony with Madison...it's 12:32 a.m. and we're still here.  Leaving soon. These extended hours are kinda interesting.  I just hope students don't get so demanding to keep the hours this long.  Seriously people...it's FINALS week. That's the only reason why there's extended hours.

Well, it's back to Fields. Rick should write something, since I've written the last 3 posts.  I know you're busy, friend, but so am I.  Blog writing is my study break. You should take one.

Anyway, GOOD LUCK WITH FINALS loyal followers!  You'll do great! Just think summer vacation is just around the corner! (actually it's more like spring vacation...we get out so darn early! hahaha)

P.S. Drinking water is a good way to stay awake and hydrated!  Grab a sweet water bottle today! :D

RB: Hey guess what?! Library is open until Midnight! Haha.
RB: Hope you're having fun in the library! Haha.
RB: Hey. Next week, the library will be open until 1! Haha

So yeah, most of those are from Rick, but still.

If you're wondering, yes. I'm in the library. Be here all week. Try the veal. hahahaha! ;)

P.S. Someone is totally singing their heart out in a study room in the basement. QUIET ZONE my butt. I can still hear them, even though they are in a study room and I have my headphones on.

P.P.S. ACTUALLY, the whole freakin' building is a quiet zone, but study away friends! Finals are coming!

Visit #5 & more library time at UP.

...was last Thursday.  I made an impromptu visit to the Multnomah County Library.  I got to do some more research, and as always, it was pretty interesting!  I really enjoy looking at old magazines from the 1940s.  Life was definitely different during those times.  I kinda wish I got to experience it, even though I'd most definitely be one of those independent women, trying to change the world (or something like that).  I wish I had time to read some of the fiction stories in there because they looked intriguing.  However, I'm pretty sure most of them were about women trying to get in relationships. Bahahaha...! Anywho, it was a productive day in the library once again! YES!

Because I wanted to record my presence, I had to take a picture (for the sake of the blog, of course).  However, weird stuff was going down.  As I was stacking my books (bound magazines), I could totally tell this guy on my right was watching me. CREEPER! Seriously though. I guess it didn't help I was wearing a dress and all. I definitely couldn't smile at my computer because why else would you do that?! Hmmm...so I ended up looking all tired or depressed (or both?!). Actually, it's a face of annoyance because that stupid creeper was hindering me from taking a good picture. WEIRD-O. But nevertheless, I got a picture with my stack of books! WIN!

After spending a good part of my Thursday afternoon at the county library, I hosted the CPB End of the Year party! Good times!  :)

After that hecka mega break, it was back to the UP library.  Madison and I sat at the balcony facing the parking lot.  Rick met up with us but was doing his own thing.  Pretty sure we called him out for talking too much.  Sorry dude, but it's true (still).  But yeah, I had to leave for a floor meeting back in Fields and came back with gelato (courtesy of Kristina Large)!  It was awesome. Back to work until closing...the usge.

Thursday and Friday ended up being one long day for me, if you catch my drift...

Tiredness

Argh!!! Why am I so freakin' tired all the time?  I really need to do my assignments tonight with laundry and packing to boot! Oh my goodness.  I just want - no, need - to wake up and be able to complete all these demands.  Luckily, the weekend is swiftly approaching.  Hopefully, I can get some rest and be productive as well, even with the ASUP Executive Board Transition Retreat this weekend.  I'm actually looking forward to a quick Oregon coast getaway. 

ANYWAY, Rick and I are going to take a break with a quick Cove run.  One 16 oz. zebra mocha, please!

A Day in the Library Life with Madison!

Hey hey! We're back from Spring Break, and Madison and I spent ALL of Study Sunday in the library!

Before heading to the library, we had Sunday brunch from the Commons - pretty good as usual. Then we headed back to Fields to get our study gear. It was off to the Cove to get some caffeine. Yup, we were pretty much hyped on coffee the whole day. In fact, Madison was shaking...whoa!

We sat in the corner spot and played musical chairs there because the entrance of the library kept distracting both of us. While Madison completed her Spanish assignments, I applied for eight jobs, talk about time consuming.

Rick made his presence through silent phone calls and texts throughout the day. Sorry dude, we're in the library! Gotta keep it quiet, son! He came by after dinner when I had to rush out to get some stuff back in Fields.

Returned for the remainder of the night with Rick, while Madison worked the late shift. Sent some CPB information out to the amazing members of CPB, while Rick uploaded some "edgy" pictures, which got some instant views. Cool stuff!

There was a good quote from the night from the one and only Scott, who's celebrating his birthday today. Woot! We'll have a special blog later. Anyway back to that quote...well, Rick can tell you because I wasn't there.

So yeah...we're back in the library with 6 weeks left of school. Oh em gee...seriously. Especially for all those seniors graduating out there. These last weeks of school are going to fly like no other, and it will be May 2nd. We'll be walking across that stage, getting our degrees, and starting our lives out in the world, whether that is in the workforce, volunteering or continuing our education. Look out world! Here comes the class of 2010!

More Adventures of Tarra & Sam (and Rick, too)

Tonight (and by tonight, I mean Wednesday night) in the library was interesting. Let's start out chronologically and then break it down...

I got out of class early, headed to EspressoUP to find Sam and a bunch of other friends. After a while, Sam and I decided to go to the library to work (aka her Cancer exam and CPB things).

On the second floor, we found Andrew jumping in between the book stacks. Erm...why? I have no idea, but I assume he was getting his picture taken or something. I mean, no one just does that in the library, right? He stopped and talked to me and Sam. :)

We proceeded to the study room, thinking it would be quieter for working. Boy were we wrong! The study room next door was playing loud music...what the heck?! Lucky for us, we found a pair of computers on the main floor, which is where we were stationed for the rest of the night.

While working on the computers and talking with each other, we had a couple visitors, including the one and only Rick Baleros! Ha! He came and sat at a computer behind Sam and me...because he didn't wany people to know he was on Facebook. Sheesh.

Anyway, Andrew was the most frequent visitor.

1. He tried scaring Sam, but she just looked annoyed when he did so. Apparently I look confused.

2. He scared me by placing a stapler on my keyboard. I swear I thought he was going to attack me with the stapler; although I'm not sure what the motive behind that would be...

3. This might be the same encounter as #2, but we had a quick discussion about names. Mostly because I like saying his name, and well, my first name isn't exactly the easiest to pronounce at first glance. Nevertheless it was an interesting conversation.

4. Lastly, he came by as he was leaving the library. He placed the stapler on Sam's things and attempted to place the 3-hole punch on my things. Fail. He only got a hold of part of it, and it came apart, making a loud noise. Oh wow! hahaha

It was cool talking to Andrew tonight. I feel like I only see him in the library nowadays. *sigh*

Jeff came around every once in a while, so that was cool. According to Rick, his jacket was "silky smooth," or something like that.

Rick thought Scott wasn't in the library and was sad about that, which he told me through text: "Sad, Scott isn't working the desk :(." I pointed out to him that Scott was actually on the other side of the room instead of at the tech desk in the computer lab. hahaha

So although I wrote that one post about "creeping" and "stalking," I gotta admit that we actually do stalk one person in the library - 15 minutes guy. Really though! We don't talk to him unless he tells us there's 15 minutes left in the library (like he did tonight) or if we need some help with something. For example, tonight, there weren't any staples in the stapler, so I took it and asked him at the front desk. I felt like Cady in Mean Girls when she only talks to Aaron in Calculus about minuscule things, you know what I mean? I mean it's different in a sense. Anywho, we have confirmation that his name is Ryan, which I suppose is helpful if we ever decide to talk to him. Blah. Oh well.

Alli came over and took Sam home.

Rick was conversing with me on Facebook, clogging up my computer, so it took forever to send my CPB weekly update! Shoot! I finished it though (thank goodness)! :)

Welcome back to Portland!

It's 10:33 p.m., and I'm super tired. I mean seriously, my body thinks it's like 1:30 a.m. Darn jet lag. I felt like a zombie walking to the library tonight, but I felt that I needed to have some library adventures with Rick, since he went almost a whole week without me.

So yes, we are reunited on the second balcony and took a snazzy picture in the library!

Awesome, yeah?? The glasses are straight from NACA Nationals! Yeah, Boston! Woot! :)

I kinda miss the East Coast, even though we had beautiful weather here today. I guess I just liked taking a break from school and being on CPB business. It's pretty awesome!

On the other hand, my friends miss me a lot when I'm gone. I really had no idea how much of an impact I had on the community here at UP. It's pretty amazing.

My friends abducted me last night as a way of welcoming me back. They blindfolded me and carried me away in a car with "so and so" - whoever that is. I was pretty much terrified the whole time, even though I was with people I trust. "So and so" ended up being Colin. I kinda figured that out when Kristina said his name and when he touched my knee. I also figured out that we were going to VooDoo Donuts, but they said we weren't. Where else are you going to go in Portland around midnight on a Wednesday? Alright well, better get back to work before I crash in the library. I hope I get over this jet lag ends soon. As fascinating as it is, it's kinda detrimental to my studies.

Oh so Rick got a new ID card because he lost his other one in Kristina's room. He got a new picture and everything. And then...Kristina found his old one. Oh well...he has a better picture now. YAY! Check it out...
